Meet the Fellow: Emily Skutnik, DO, Endocrinology Fellow.

Career goal: To become an endocrinologist.

Select a program where you see a wide variety of pathology and where attendings are approachable.”

What makes your LVHN training program different from others across the country?

Attendings who strive to make us the best-prepared endocrinologists after our training is finished set apart the program.

What has been the most extraordinary part of your training experience so far?

Getting to work at the diabetes-in-pregnancy outpatient clinic has been special. This is a unique experience where you get exposure to patients with diabetes during all stages of pregnancy from preconception counseling to the later stages of pregnancy. You get to follow patients who deliver at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest during their admission.

What is one memory you have from your training so far that will stick with you for your career?

My first thyroid-storm patient who had TSI and TPO antibodies detected and was treated with plasmapheresis.

What is one piece of advice you would share with someone as they select a training program?

Select a program where you see a wide variety of pathology and where attendings are approachable.

What does it mean to be a fellow at LVHN?

It means working hard, consistently learning and doing teamwork.
